Developing sound financial management skills is one of the most powerful ways that people with limited incomes can attain and maintain economic security. The Women’s Institute has developed an interactive economic literacy program for people transitioning from homelessness to economic stability. The curriculum is based on popular education principles and is especially designed to meet the needs of learners from a range of ethnic, economic, and educational backgrounds. The five-module curriculum includes activities on Budgeting, Banking, Credit, Taxes and Benefits, and Career Choices, and is available in English and Spanish.

The Women’s Institute will soon be adding a youth curriculum to its financial literacy package. YELL - Youth Economic LIteracy and Leadership - offers two tracks, a 12-week program of fun and interactive activities designed to engage girls’ interests in learning about financial matters, and a 6-week Peer Leadership component developed to help girls gain leadership and facilitation skills in order to assist in the delivery of the program as well as to influence the behaviors and attitudes of their friends.
