Acushnet Commons, New Bedford, MA - 2005
The Women's Institute renovated an historic, former school building in the Acushnet Heights section of New Bedford for an innovative mixed-use development. This project combines a community center with 12 units of affordable housing. The community center will house adolescent, after school, education and family support programs and other services geared towards tenants and the surrounding neighborhood.
Soromundi commons
Soromundi Commons, YWCA of the Hartford Region, Hartford, CT - 2005
The Women's Institute coordinated a first-in-the-nation project sponsored by the YWCA that provides a full continuum of housing, including an emergency shelter, transitional efficiency units and permanent one-bedroom apartments, designed for formerly homeless and low-income individuals. The YWCA of the Hartford Region initially retained the Women's Institute to do a strategic assessment of its existing housing program. The Women's Institute assembled over $9 million in public and private resources to create housing for up to 71 individuals. In addition, the Women's Institute brokered a partnership between the YWCA and Chrysalis Center, a well-respected provider of case management services to very low-income people in the Hartford region. As a result, residents of the redeveloped Soromundi Commons will have access to significantly enhanced services, including employment and training.
Crescent Field
Crescent Field Condominiums, Newton, MA - 2000
The Women's Institute developed a surplus parcel of land in Newton as a mixed-income community. Twenty units of energy efficient townhouses were constructed on a new street. Eight units were sold at market rate, eight were sold to moderate-income home buyers and four were purchased by the Newton Housing Authority and rented to low income families who have been victims of domestic violence. As the developer, the Women's Institute was responsible for all phases of project development.
