35th Anniversary Annual Meeting

Thanks to All Who Supported and Attended Our Event

The Women’s Institute would like to thank all who attended and sponsored our 35th Anniversary Annual Meeting. We were delighted to have such a great turnout of people who are dedicated to building community and promoting opportunity for our most vulnerable neighbors.

Thank you for helping us honor Kristen Harol, recipient of the 2016 Nancy Nye Memorial Award, and Andrew DeFranza, recipient of the 2016 Anne Gelbspan Partners in Community Award. We are proud to work with these outstanding partners who have dedicated their personal and professional lives to creating community through affordable housing.

Essex Place Groundbreaking

The Women’s Institute and Essex Elderly and Affordable Housing are proud to announce the groundbreaking of Essex Centerbrook Place in Essex, CT

Essex Place will be a 22 unit affordable rental housing development for the elderly. Construction will take place on a vacant 0.96 acre infill parcel adjacent to an existing 36 unit affordable elderly project known as Essex Court. The new development will include 18 one bedroom units and 4 two bedroom units which are geared toward elderly households that may require a full time aide. Common sitting areas on the 2nd and 3rd floors will encourage social interaction among the residents. The project will include a community room, kitchen and common restrooms, which will be served by a back-up generator so it can be utilized as an emergency warming center during severe storms and power outages. This common area will also be available upon request to local community organizations.

We are greatly appreciative for the funders that made this vision a reality:

  •    State of Connecticut Department of Housing (DOH)
  •    Connecticut Finance Housing Authority (CHFA)
  •    Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston
  •    Essex Savings Bank
  •    Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)

Home Depot Day of Service at Victory Gardens

Our gratitude
to the Home Depot Foundation and the 100 Team Depot volunteers that participated in their Day of Service at Victory Gardens!

Despite the forecast of rain, close to 100 volunteers from several Home Depot stores across Connecticut came together at Victory Gardens in Newington, CT to participate in a Day of Service on Thursday, September 25th to create exciting and much-needed outdoor amenities to help support Veterans and their families. Working hard, they created patios for many of our residents, as well as 22 picnic tables for our courtyard, bookshelves for our residents at 75 Victory Way, as well as several other smaller projects. They also delivered generators to serve as emergency backup for several of our buildings, storage containers for our residents, and flooring to help us finish our basement space.

This day of service from Team Depot and the Home Depot Foundation will translate into a lifetime of memories for our Veteran residents of Victory Gardens. Our residents and the entire Women’s Institute team were incredibly touched by their hard work and dedication, and very thankful to Home Depot’s commitment to serving in their communities and to improving the lives of Veterans. Please take a look at the gallery below to see some of the action.
